How to Set Up a Blog with Blogger

For the uninitiated, learning how to set up a blog with Blogger can be liberating. For someone who has never had an online presence – creating a website might seem like a difficult task. It is true that more involved sites are complex – but, luckily, getting started with Google’s Blogger serviceĀ  is not.

Go to Blogger.com and sign in with your Google account. If you don’t have one – no problem, it is easy to get. Just click the big “create a blog” button and the site will walk you through the process.

Next you will be asked to sign up for blogger.

And then you will be asked to name your blog.

Don’t worry too much about your Blog Title at this point – because this can be changed at a later time. However, your blog address is permanent so some thought will need to be given here. It is best to choose something that is descriptive of what your site will be about. Notice that a Blogger domain will appear as follows: http:// name of blog. blogspot .com (the actual domain will not have any spaces).

Next you will be asked to choose a template. Again, this also can be changed at a later time. I like to start with the Minima template. It is very simple and can easily be customized with a unique header at a later point in time. For those who are familiar with this service – it will be interesting to take a look at the templates offered through Blogger in Draft (an updated service that Google is rolling out). The templates offered through this new interface are fantastic and there are lots more widgets and custom options. However, this service is still in Beta testing and there still are some kinks to work out. So for the new webmasters – I would not recommend giving this a try until it is finalized.

And now it is time to Start Blogging!

My next post in this series will be a walk through of the different settings options and how to optimally configure the site.
