The Voice of Doubt is NOT Your Friend

I recently started a new internet business venture (besides this one – because I really don’t have enough to do ;-) ).

I picked a site topic that had good potential, and very small – but very strong competition. It is a local niche, so the market is also relatively small.

I had tested the waters before with a site on a similar topic, and it did well enough – but I made some mistakes along the way and wanted to start fresh.

My site is now a few weeks old and picking up some steam.

And this is the point where that little voice of doubt starts speaking up.

Just when things seem to be going well – I begin to doubt myself.

  • Is my site concept a good one?
  • Is the competition too strong?
  • Will people laugh at this idea?
  • Will I be able to monetize it?
  • What makes my site better than those that I am competing with?
  • What will make people choose to spend their time and their advertising dollars on my site over those of the competition?

In the beginning this voice was so loud that I listened – and quit. I moved on to a new idea while the old one just sat there and got stale. I paid no regard to the time and energy I had put into creating those websites. I was treating my work like a hobby – flitting from one thing to the next.

Well, as time marched on – and other websites grew stronger, I was left holding a bunch of unfinished projects. But I learned that for others to take my internet business seriously – I had to first take it seriously myself.

Every business owner, whether online or offline, has suffered periods of self doubt. They have all faced the same obstacles of competition, increasing traffic, sales, and exposure, and also the uncertainty that the future holds.

The difference is that those who persevere – those who tell that voice of doubt to SHUT UP – get farther in the end. Not every concept is a success but the only way to figure that out is to work hard and take a chance.
